Open Enrollment is coming, and for freelancers health insurance can be tricky when income changes from year to year.
Before automatically renewing your current plan, here are five things worth checking:
💰 Re-estimate your 2027 income.
Marketplace savings are based on what you expect to earn during the coverage year, not simply what you made last year. If you’re self-employed, that generally means your estimated net self-employment income.
🔄 Don’t just auto-renew.
Premiums, deductibles, provider networks and prescription coverage can change every year. Your current plan may not still be your best fit.
👩⚕️ Check doctors and prescriptions.
A cheaper premium may not save you money if your doctors are out-of-network or an important medication isn’t covered.
🧮 Look beyond the monthly premium.
Compare deductibles, copays, coinsurance and the out-of-pocket maximum too. The cheapest monthly plan isn’t always the cheapest plan overall.
📅 Know your deadline.
Covered California gives you until Dec. 31 for Jan. 1 coverage, and Open Enrollment continues through Jan. 31.
We’re happy to help you compare plans and see what makes sense for 2027.
